abstract = "The city of Alegre has an area of 772,000 kmē, being the third
largest of the mesoregion of the Esp{\'{\i}}rito Santo Southern.
Its urban structure has undergone great changes: the green areas
have been replaced by buildings, houses, roads and other
infrastructures that provide the development of the region. The
objective of this work is to analyze the temporal evolution of the
urbanized area of Alegre city, between the years of 1821 and 2016.
The study relied on the use of maps, aerial photos and satellite
images of Landsat TM 5 and Landsat OLI 8 from different epochs.
The methodology was developed in three stages: Preprocessing,
image information acquisition through visual interpretation and
unsupervised classification using the Isoseg algorithm performed
in the SPRING 5.4.1 and ArcGis 10.3 software, and, finally the
spatio-temporal delimitation of the urban evolution of the area,
creating polygons to calculate the urbanized area in each year of
study. The results of the visual interpretation showed that there
was an expansion of 191.35 ha of the urbanized area in the period
from 1821 to 2016, occurring in a diffuse way, without following a
preferential direction. The unsupervised classification was
carried out on satellite images between 1988 and 2016, indicating
an increase of 57.54 ha of urbanized area, different from that
obtained through visual interpretation, which was 82.07 ha. If
compared, both techniques demonstrated a growth of the urban
{\'a}rea, however, the unsupervised classification method using
                         Isoseg proved to be inaccurate.",
